Goth and Alt Scene in Mexico City: El Chopo, Goth Picnics and Dark Dance Floors

Mexico City has one of the biggest and most welcoming dark scenes in the world. Goths, punks and metalheads have been gathering at the same Saturday market for more than four decades, and the city even hosts free goth events at public arts centers. This guide to goth Mexico City covers the market, the dance floors and the best dark days of the year.
A quick tip before you go: dates change a lot. Check each venue's and promoter's socials first.
El Chopo: The Saturday Ritual
The Tianguis Cultural del Chopo, or just El Chopo, is the heart of alternative Mexico City. It's a Saturday street market in the Buenavista area, and it has been a meeting place for punks, goths, metalheads, rockers and skaters since 1980. In 2023 the city officially declared it intangible cultural heritage, and it celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2025 with free concerts.
What to expect:
- Stalls selling records, CDs and cassettes
- Band shirts, patches, boots and handmade clothes
- Jewelry, accessories and zines
- Bands playing on the market's stage
- Crowds of people in every kind of alt style
Go early, bring cash, and plan to spend a few hours. Even if you buy nothing, it's the best people-watching in the city. It's also an easy place to meet people, since everyone is there for the same reason.
Goth Picnics and World Goth Day
Mexico City's goth scene gets real support from the city's cultural institutions, which is rare and lovely. The city has marked World Goth Day (May 22) since 2015, often with free events at the FARO arts centers around town.
The Picnic Gótico is a free goth picnic with music, dark dance performances, fashion shows and vendors. It reached its tenth edition in 2025 at FARO Tláhuac. It's relaxed, daytime and perfect if you want to meet people without a loud club. Bring a blanket and your best parasol.
Dark Dance Floors
Foro Bizarro
Foro Bizarro in Roma Norte is a key meeting point for the city's alternative and dark crowd. It works as both a concert room and a club. Weekends alternate between independent rock bands and long DJ sessions focused on darkwave and post-punk. For international bands, buy your tickets online in advance because capacity is limited.
The Wider Party Circuit
Mexico City has many goth, darkwave, post-punk and industrial parties run by local crews in different venues. Some mix in cumbia, which is a very CDMX way to keep a goth dance floor moving. The best way to find them is to follow local DJs and promoters and ask around at El Chopo.

Metal and Big Festivals
Mexico has a huge metal audience. Hell & Heaven Metal Fest is the country's biggest metal festival, usually held at Foro Pegaso near Toluca, just outside Mexico City. It brings giant international lineups and big crowds of fans from all over Latin America.
Mexico City is also a regular stop for touring rock, metal and goth bands, and its concerts are known for loud, enthusiastic crowds. If you're heading to a heavy show, brush up on mosh pit etiquette first.
Día de Muertos
The Day of the Dead, around November 1 and 2, is a beautiful time for anyone who loves dark aesthetics. It's a family holiday about remembering loved ones, with altars, marigolds, candles and sugar skulls all over the city. Neighborhoods and cemeteries fill with decorations, and some alcaldías, including Azcapotzalco, hold their own celebrations.
Join in with respect. It's a real tradition, not a costume party, even though many people paint their faces as catrinas and catrines. Our goth Halloween ideas post has more ideas for the season.
A Perfect Goth Weekend in Mexico City
- Friday: Head to Roma Norte for dinner, then check what's on at Foro Bizarro. If there's a band, buy your ticket online first.
- Saturday morning and afternoon: Go to El Chopo. Arrive early, browse every row, catch a band on the stage and make a friend or two. This is the main event.
- Saturday night: Ask your new friends from El Chopo where the party is. Seriously, it's the best way to find the night's goth or darkwave event.
- Sunday: Take it slow. Visit a museum, walk through a park or, in late May, look for a goth picnic or World Goth Day event at a FARO.
If you're visiting around November 1 and 2, spend time seeing the Día de Muertos altars and decorations. It's one of the most beautiful times to be in the city.
Tips for Goth Mexico City
- Pace yourself at altitude. The city sits high up, so take it easy on your first day, especially if you plan to dance all night.
- Bring layers. Days can be warm and nights cool. A light black jacket is perfect.
- Rainy season is real. Summer afternoons often bring heavy rain. Keep an umbrella in your bag.
- Carry cash for El Chopo. Many stalls are cash only.
- Learn some Spanish. A few phrases make a big difference, and people are very friendly.
Meeting People
El Chopo on a Saturday is the easiest place in the city to make alt friends. Compliment someone's patches, ask about a band, and the conversation goes from there. The goth picnics are another relaxed way in.
