Alt Scene in Austin: Goth Nights, Red River Shows and Bats at Sunset

By the Alt Chat crew · Oct 28, 2026 · 4 min read

Four friends in alt clothes sitting on a riverside hill at sunset, watching bats fly from a bridge.

Alt Austin is a lot more than its "Live Music Capital of the World" slogan. Under the cowboy boots and food trucks there's a lively goth club that just turned 25, a cluster of rock venues on Red River Street, two great alt clothing shops and over a million bats that fly out from under a downtown bridge every summer night. It's hot, it's friendly and the shows go late.

Nights and venues change, so check socials before heading out.

Elysium: the heart of goth Austin

Elysium on Red River Street is Austin's oldest goth club, and it celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2026. The walls are covered with art and photos of the goth and alternative artists who have played there, and it hosts a mix of nights:

  • Regular goth, darkwave and industrial nights like Nightshade, which leans into darkwave, industrial and dark club music.
  • 80s and new wave nights, including Depeche Mode versus The Cure parties.
  • Los Muertos: Goth en Español, celebrating Latin American and Spanish-language dark music.
  • The annual Gothic Prom in spring, a chance to wear the formal black outfit you never got to wear in high school.

It's the easiest place to meet the local scene. Go once and you'll recognize faces the next time.

Other dark nights

  • Dark Ritual. A goth, post-punk and darkwave dance night run by the owner of Secret Oktober, held at Soundspace at Captain Quack's. Many editions are all ages and free, which makes it a great intro night.
  • Crimewave. A touring goth, darkwave and new wave dance party that stops in Austin regularly, often at Empire Control Room.

The Darker Side of Austin is a local website with a calendar of goth, alt and horror events, run by the owner of Bloody Rose Boutique. Bookmark it.

Red River and live music

The Red River Cultural District downtown is Austin's live music strip, with a cluster of rock, punk and metal venues within a few blocks of each other. Mohawk is one of the best known, with indoor and outdoor stages and lots of punk, emo, post-punk and indie shows.

Texas has a strong goth and darkwave band scene right now, with bands like Twin Tribes, Rosegarden Funeral Party and NITE playing all over the state. Austin itself is home to longtime industrial and dark acts like Mentallo and the Fixer and Curse Mackey. Check out our list of new goth bands for more.

Festivals

  • Levitation. Born as Austin Psych Fest in 2008, Levitation is now a multi-day fall festival spread across Red River and East Side venues. It books psych, post-punk, goth, punk and metal acts, often with a few dark legends on the bill.
  • Austin Psych Fest. The spring festival under the same umbrella, with a more compact, psych-focused lineup.

Shopping

  • Secret Oktober (South 1st Street). A locally owned shop for new and vintage goth, punk, industrial and darkwave clothing, accessories and local band merch. It's been a scene hub for years.
  • Bloody Rose Boutique. Dark streetwear and alternative clothes for goths, punks, witches and rockers, known for carrying a wide range of sizes. It also hosts small events.
  • Waterloo Records. Austin's beloved independent record store, open since 1982, now in a new home on North Lamar. Free in-store shows happen regularly.

Bats, cemeteries and spooky days

The Congress Avenue Bridge bats

The best goth outing in Austin is free. From around spring to fall, a huge colony of Mexican free-tailed bats lives under the Congress Avenue Bridge and flies out in a long, swirling cloud at dusk. Bring a blanket to the grassy banks of Lady Bird Lake, or watch from the bridge itself. It's a perfect first date.

Día de los Muertos

The Mexic-Arte Museum runs Viva la Vida, Austin's largest and longest-running Día de los Muertos festival, in late October or early November. Expect altars, art, music and lots of beautifully painted faces.

Oakwood Cemetery

Austin's oldest city cemetery, east of downtown, is a quiet spot full of old trees and historic graves. Please visit respectfully.

Wearing black in the Texas heat

Austin summers are brutal, and goths here have it figured out. Swap heavy fabrics for black linen, cotton and mesh. Lace and loose, flowy dresses or wide-leg pants let air through. Save the leather and velvet for the short winter, and keep makeup light during the day, since setting spray is your best friend. Big black hats and parasols aren't just a look here, they're survival tools. And always carry water if you're heading to an outdoor show.

Who you'll meet

Austin's alt scene is laid-back and very mixed. You'll meet Texas goths who've been going to Elysium for decades, young baby bats, Latino darkwave fans, metalheads, punks, witchy types, horror fans, musicians and plenty of people who moved here from somewhere else. It's a friendly city, and striking up a conversation at a show is completely normal.

Meeting alt people in Austin

Austin is growing fast, and it can be hard to find your crowd under all the tech and tourism. On Alt Chat you can swipe through alt and goth people nearby in Meet, hop into a live chat room, or post in Realm asking who's heading to the next Gothic Prom. New in town? Read our guide to finding the alt scene in a new city.

Road trip ideas: the goth scene in New Orleans is a long day's drive east, and the alt scene in Atlanta is worth a weekend.
