The 25 Best Emo Albums Ever

Picking the best emo albums is a great way to start an argument at an emo night, so let's get it started. Emo has gone through several lives, from 1980s Washington DC hardcore to twinkly Midwest basements to arena singalongs, and every era has records people defend with their whole chest.
This list runs roughly in order of release, so you can follow how the sound changed. It's a starting point, not a final ruling. If your favorite isn't here, that's what the comments in your group chat are for.
The roots: DC and the early 90s
1. Rites of Spring – Rites of Spring (1985)
This is where the story usually starts. Rites of Spring took hardcore punk and made it emotional and raw instead of tough. The term "emo" grew out of this DC scene, and this album still sounds urgent.
2. Jawbreaker – 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1994)
Not always filed as emo, but impossible to leave out. Blake Schwarzenbach's gravelly voice and sharp, personal writing influenced a huge chunk of the bands below.
3. Sunny Day Real Estate – Diary (1994)
Seattle, on Sub Pop, in the middle of grunge, and they made something totally different. Diary is huge, dramatic and tender, and many fans call it the moment emo found its shape. "In Circles" is the essential track.

4. Weezer – Pinkerton (1996)
Ignored by critics on release, now one of the most loved emo-adjacent records ever. Messy, honest and loud.
5. Texas Is the Reason – Do You Know Who You Are? (1996)
The band's only full-length, and a perfect one. Big guitars, big feelings, short career.
6. Mineral – The Power of Failing (1997)
Quiet verses, explosive choruses. Mineral perfected the soft-loud build that so many bands copied.
7. The Promise Ring – Nothing Feels Good (1997)
Bright, bouncy and a little bit pop. Proof that emo could be fun.
8. Braid – Frame & Canvas (1998)
Tangled guitars and shout-along vocals from Illinois. A core Midwest emo record.
9. American Football – American Football (1999)
The house on the cover is famous, the guitars are twinkly and the trumpet is iconic. "Never Meant" is the song that got a whole generation into Midwest emo.
10. Jimmy Eat World – Clarity (1999)
Before "The Middle" made them stars, Jimmy Eat World made this gorgeous, ambitious album. It's become a cult favorite and many fans think it's their best.
11. Saves the Day – Through Being Cool (1999)
The bridge between emo and pop-punk. Catchy, fast and full of sharp little lines.
12. The Get Up Kids – Something to Write Home About (1999)
Synths, hooks and a ton of heart. This Kansas City band shaped the sound of early 2000s emo.
The 2000s: emo goes big
13. Thursday – Full Collapse (2001)
Post-hardcore intensity with emotional weight. The New Jersey scene starts here for a lot of people.
14. Dashboard Confessional – The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (2001)
Mostly acoustic and very sincere. Chris Carrabba's shows turned into full-crowd singalongs.
15. Jimmy Eat World – Bleed American (2001)
Yes, a second entry. "The Middle" and "Sweetness" took emo onto mainstream radio.
16. Taking Back Sunday – Tell All Your Friends (2002)
Two vocalists trading lines, lots of drama and some of the most quoted song titles in the scene.
17. The Used – The Used (2002)
Screams, sweetness and chaos from Utah. "The Taste of Ink" and "Buried Myself Alive" still hit.
18. Brand New – Deja Entendu (2003)
The album where Brand New grew from pop-punk into something darker and more literary. Fans will also fight for The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006).
19. My Chemical Romance – Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)
Vampires, revenge and "Helena." This is the album that made eyeliner and black hair a full movement.
20. Fall Out Boy – From Under the Cork Tree (2005)
Wordy titles, huge hooks and "Sugar, We're Goin Down." Pure 2000s.
21. My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade (2006)
A full rock opera about death, with marching band costumes. Theatrical, ambitious and one of the most important emo-era albums ever made.
22. Paramore – Riot! (2007)
Hayley Williams' voice, "Misery Business" and endless energy. A defining record for a lot of people who grew up on the Warped Tour era.
The emo revival
Around 2010, a new wave of bands went back to the twinkly, DIY sound of the 90s. If you want the full story, read our guide to the emo revival.

Intense, cathartic and widely considered one of the best albums of the revival.
