Goth Valentine's Day Ideas for Couples and Singles

Valentine's Day can feel like a holiday designed by a greeting card company that only owns pink ink. But a goth Valentine's Day is honestly one of the best parts of the year. Romance has always been a big piece of gothic culture, from Victorian love tokens to vampire novels to every slow song on a Cure album, so you're not hijacking the holiday. You're just celebrating it properly.

Here are ideas for couples, singles, new crushes and friend groups, from cozy nights in to big dramatic gestures.

Goth Valentine's date ideas for couples

Have a cemetery picnic (in daylight)

Old cemeteries are often beautiful, peaceful and full of incredible stonework. Many historic ones welcome visitors and even run guided tours. Pack a blanket and some snacks, take a walk among the angels and ivy, and read the names out loud. Be respectful: stay on paths, don't sit on graves, and check the cemetery's visiting hours first.

Do a horror double feature

Pick one classic and one modern film, dim the lights and light every candle you own. Some romantic-ish picks:

  • Bride of Frankenstein (1935), the original goth power couple
  • Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), all velvet, longing and amazing costumes
  • Edward Scissorhands (1990), sweet and strange in the best way
  • Corpse Bride (2005), a love story that literally crosses into the afterlife
  • Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), two centuries-old vampires being very in love and very cool
  • Crimson Peak (2015), a gothic romance with a gorgeous haunted house

Cook a "black dinner"

Make a menu where everything is dark: squid ink pasta, black rice, beet soup, dark chocolate dessert, blackberries. It's fun to plan, it looks amazing on the table, and it gives you something to do together instead of fighting for a restaurant booking.

Go to a goth club night

Lots of goth and darkwave nights throw a special event around February 14, sometimes called a "Bloody Valentine" or "Black Valentine" party. Dress up, dance to the slow songs, and leave the fancy dinner to everyone else. Check your local promoters' socials in late January.

Write each other a love letter

The Victorians were serious about love letters, mourning jewelry and keepsakes. Steal the idea. Write a real letter by hand, seal it with wax if you can find a seal, and maybe add a pressed flower. It costs almost nothing and they'll keep it forever.

Dress up for each other

Pick a theme together, like Victorian, vampire, 80s deathrock or Morticia and Gomez, and get dressed up even if you're only going to the corner diner. Matching outfits are a whole art form. Our post on goth couple ideas has plenty of inspiration.

Goth Valentine gift ideas

Skip the generic heart-shaped balloon. Some gifts that actually feel right:

  • Dark roses. True black roses don't really exist in nature. What you'll find are very deep red varieties or dyed roses. Dried roses also turn a beautiful dark burgundy.
  • Silver jewelry. A bat pendant, a poison ring, a moon necklace or a skull ring. Our goth jewelry guide can help you pick.
  • Vinyl. Find a record they've been hunting for, or one you think they'll love.
  • Poetry. A vintage copy of Poe, Baudelaire or Christina Rossetti makes a lovely, slightly spooky gift.
  • Candles and incense. Something smoky, like amber, oud or black fig.
  • A taxidermy-free curiosity. A pressed butterfly frame, a crystal, a tarot deck or a tiny resin skull.
  • A mixtape or playlist. Yes, still romantic. See below.

A goth Valentine's playlist

Music is the fastest way to set the mood. Some love songs (and love-adjacent songs) that work beautifully on February 14:

  • The Cure – "Lovesong"
  • Siouxsie and the Banshees – "Kiss Them for Me"
  • Type O Negative – "Love You to Death"
  • The Smiths – "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out"
  • Mazzy Star – "Fade Into You"
  • Cocteau Twins – "Heaven or Las Vegas"
  • Chris Isaak – "Wicked Game" (or HIM's cover, if you want it darker)
  • Joy Division – "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
  • The Cure – "Just Like Heaven"
  • Sisters of Mercy – "Marian"

Ideas for single goths

Being single on Valentine's Day is honestly great. No reservations, no pressure, and all the leftover chocolate goes on sale on February 15.

Throw an anti-Valentine's party

Invite friends over for a horror marathon, black cupcakes and a "worst date stories" contest. Ask everyone to dress in black (easy) or in their most dramatic outfit (more fun).

Have a self-date

Buy yourself the roses. Take yourself to the museum, a record store and your favorite café. Put on the outfit you've been saving. It sounds cheesy until you do it, and then it's just a really good day.

Go out with your crew

Club nights on or around Valentine's are usually packed with single people who also didn't want to stay home. It's a relaxed time to dance, meet people and maybe trade numbers.

Meet someone new without the pressure

If you'd rather stay in, a live chat room is a nice middle ground. On Alt Chat, the Night Chats rooms stay open all night, so you can drop into something like "Can't sleep" or "Hello" and just talk to other alt people who are also home on February 14. If something clicks, great. If not, you still had a fun night.

Ideas for a new crush or first date

If you just started talking to someone, Valentine's Day can feel like a lot. Keep it light:

  • Suggest a "non-Valentine's" plan, like a record store crawl or a thrift store hunt, so nobody feels pressured.
  • Go to a goth or emo night together. Dancing gives you something to do besides staring into each other's eyes.
  • Visit a natural history museum, an old library or a botanical garden's greenhouse.
  • Send them a song instead of a big gift. It's sweet, low-stakes and says a lot.

Make it your own

The best goth Valentine's Day isn't about doing everything on this list. It's about picking the parts that feel like you. Maybe that's a candlelit dinner and a vampire movie. Maybe it's a cemetery walk in the afternoon sun and a sweaty night on the dance floor. Maybe it's pizza with your friends while you all roast the cheesiest rom-com you can find.

Romance looks good in black. Have fun with it.

FAQ

Do goths celebrate Valentine's Day?

Plenty do, and plenty skip it. Goth culture has always loved romance, from vampire stories to The Cure's love songs, so a dark, dramatic Valentine's Day fits right in. It's just usually more candles and horror films than pink teddy bears.

What is a good goth Valentine's gift?

Think dark red or black roses, a vintage poetry book, a piece of silver jewelry, or a vinyl record from a band you both love. Anything that feels personal and a little gothic beats a generic box of chocolates.

What can single goths do on Valentine's Day?

Host a horror movie night with friends, hit a goth club night, or treat yourself to something you've wanted for ages. You can also hop into a live chat room and meet new people without any pressure.

Where do you get black roses?

Real black roses are almost always very dark red varieties or roses that have been dyed. Ask a local florist for the darkest red they carry, or go for dried roses, which turn a lovely deep color on their own.
