Leipzig and Wave-Gotik-Treffen: The Goth Capital of the World

Once a year, over the Pentecost weekend, Leipzig turns black. Wave Gotik Treffen, usually just called WGT, is the biggest goth gathering on the planet, and for four days the whole city becomes a festival. Concerts, club nights, markets, readings and picnics spread across dozens of venues, and black-clad people from all over the world fill the trams. This guide explains how it all works and how to enjoy it.
WGT's program and venues are announced fairly close to the festival each year. Check the official WGT site and socials before you plan.
What Is Wave-Gotik-Treffen?
WGT started in 1992 and has run nearly every year since. It's less a single festival and more a takeover of a whole city. There's no one main field. Instead, events happen in concert halls, clubs, churches, parks, theaters and museums across Leipzig.
The music covers everything in the dark family: goth rock, post-punk, darkwave, industrial, EBM, neofolk, synthpop, medieval rock and metal. The crowd is just as varied. You'll see trad goths, Victorian goths, cyber goths, steampunks, pagans and metalheads side by side. Our types of goth guide is a fun primer on the styles you'll spot.
How the Wristband Works
WGT uses a festival wristband rather than single tickets. The wristband:
- Gets you into the festival venues across the city
- Covers public transport in the Leipzig fare zone during the festival, which is a huge help since venues are spread out
There are usually camping options near the main venue too. Some events, like the Victorian Picnic and many street scenes, need no wristband at all, so even without one you can soak up a lot of the atmosphere.
The Main Venues
The full venue list changes each year, but a few places are WGT classics.
- Agra. The old trade fair grounds in the south of the city are the main hub. The big Agra hall hosts headliners, and there's a large market area for clothes, jewelry and boots, plus camping nearby.
- Heidnisches Dorf (the Pagan Village). A tented village at Torhaus Dölitz with medieval and folk bands, market stalls and food. It feels like a fantasy fair.
- Moritzbastei. A historic student club inside the old city fortifications, with a run of goth club nights and events.
- Parkbühne. An open-air stage in a park, lovely on a warm evening.
Beyond these, churches host neofolk and classical concerts, theaters host readings and film screenings, and clubs host parties until morning. Plan a rough route each day, then leave room to wander.
The Victorian Picnic
The Viktorianisches Picknick (Victorian Picnic) is the most photographed moment of WGT. In Clara-Zetkin-Park, people arrive in Victorian, Rococo, Baroque and steampunk outfits with picnic baskets, blankets, china and candelabras. It's elegant, joyful and a bit surreal, and it's free and open to everyone.
Bring your own picnic, find a spot and enjoy it. Lots of locals come just to watch and take photos, so be ready to be asked for a picture. A polite yes or no are both fine.
Südfriedhof
Leipzig's Südfriedhof (South Cemetery) is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany, with grand monuments, chapels and overgrown paths. During WGT, many visitors take quiet walks there between events, and the festival program has included guided walks. Remember it's an active cemetery. Keep it calm and respectful, and don't treat it like a photo studio.
What to Wear
Anything goes at WGT, and people go all out. A few practical tips:
- Comfortable shoes. You'll walk a lot, even with trams. Break in your boots before you arrive.
- Plan for weather. Late spring in Leipzig can be hot, cool or rainy. Pack layers and an umbrella.
- One big look, several easy looks. Save your most elaborate outfit for the picnic or a headliner night, and keep the other days practical.
- Bring a small bag. You'll want water, a phone charger and space for market finds.
Our goth outfit ideas and platform boots guide can help you pack.
A Sample WGT Day
Every WGT is different, but a typical day might look like this:
- Late morning: Slow breakfast, then a tram to the Heidnisches Dorf to browse the market and catch a folk band.
- Afternoon: Shopping at the Agra market, or a quiet walk through Südfriedhof.
- Evening: A headliner in the Agra hall, or a smaller concert in a church or theater.
- Late night: Club nights at the Moritzbastei, Darkflower or another party venue until you can't dance anymore.
On picnic day, swap the afternoon for Clara-Zetkin-Park and give yourself time to get ready. The outfits take a while, and that's half the fun.
Goth Leipzig the Rest of the Year
Leipzig has a dark scene all year, not just at Pentecost. Darkflower, in the city center, is the city's regular goth club, with club nights from electro to 80s classics and concerts by touring dark bands. The Moritzbastei also hosts concerts and parties throughout the year. Leipzig is an easy train ride from Berlin, so you can pair the trip with our Berlin guide.
Tips for Your First WGT
- Book accommodation early. The city fills up fast for Pentecost weekend.
- Download the program. Mark a few must-see bands each day, then explore.
- Learn the tram lines. Tram routes connect the main venues, and your wristband covers the ride.
- Pace yourself. Four days is a lot. Take a slow morning or two.
- Say hello. WGT is incredibly social. People love talking about outfits and bands.
Meeting People
WGT is one of the best places in the world to make goth friends. Start conversations at the picnic, in the Agra market or in a tram full of people in black. If you want to find a crew before the trip, Alt Chat lets you meet alt people worldwide and chat in live group rooms, so you can arrive with a few friendly faces already lined up.
