The 40 Best Goth Bands of All Time

Every goth has a list in their head of the bands that made them. Here's ours: the goth bands that built the sound, spread it around the world and keep it alive today. It's grouped by era instead of strictly ranked, because asking a goth to rank Bauhaus against Siouxsie is a good way to start a three-hour argument.
Each entry has a place to start, so you can go from reading to listening fast.
The founders (late 1970s–early 1980s)
These bands came out of post-punk and turned it darker, stranger and more dramatic. For the wider story, see our guide to post-punk bands.
- Bauhaus – The Northampton band whose 1979 single "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is often called the first goth record. Start with In the Flat Field (1980).
- Siouxsie and the Banshees – Siouxsie Sioux's look and voice set the template for goth style. Start with Juju (1981) and "Spellbound."
- The Cure – Robert Smith's gloomy trio of Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography is essential, and Disintegration (1989) is a masterpiece. Songs of a Lost World (2024) proved they've still got it.
- Joy Division – Manchester's cold, minimal sound influenced nearly every band on this list. Start with Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
- The Sisters of Mercy – Andrew Eldritch, a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche and walls of guitar. Start with First and Last and Always (1985) and Floodland (1987).

- Virgin Prunes – Dublin art-punk provocateurs, fronted by Gavin Friday. Gloriously strange.
- UK Decay – Luton's punk-to-goth band, an early and important part of the scene.
- Sex Gang Children – Andi Sex Gang's wild, yelping vocals made them Batcave-era cult heroes.
- Xmal Deutschland – Hamburg band with icy guitars and German vocals. Start with Fetisch (1983).
- The Birthday Party – Nick Cave's chaotic early band from Australia. Not strictly goth, but loved by goths. Try Junkyard (1982).
- 45 Grave – LA deathrock with Dinah Cancer's punk snarl and a love of horror.
- The Danse Society – Barnsley band with dark, synth-laced post-punk.
The second wave (mid-to-late 1980s)

FAQ
Who was the first goth band?
There's no single answer, but Bauhaus is the most common pick, thanks to their 1979 debut single "Bela Lugosi's Dead." Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and The Cure were shaping the same dark post-punk sound at the same time.
Is The Cure a goth band?
The Cure has played everything from pop to gloom, but albums like Faith, Pornography and Disintegration are pillars of goth music. Robert Smith has often shrugged off the label, while goths have happily claimed the band anyway.
What are the big three goth bands?
Fans usually name Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Sisters of Mercy, with The Cure often added. Between them they cover the spooky, the dramatic and the drum-machine-driven sides of early goth.
Are there any good modern goth bands?
Lots. Lebanon Hanover, She Past Away, Boy Harsher and Chelsea Wolfe are a great start, and newer bands like Twin Tribes and Vision Video keep the scene busy. Our list of new goth bands has many more.
