Grunge Aesthetic: Outfits, Vibes and How to Wear It

The grunge aesthetic is the most relaxed look in alt fashion. It's flannel, faded denim, a sweater with a hole in the elbow and boots that have seen things. It looks effortless because, honestly, it mostly is. Here's where it came from and how to wear it now.

Where grunge came from

Grunge was a rock sound first. It grew in the Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle, in the late 1980s, with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees. Local label Sub Pop played a big part in putting the scene on the map.

The clothes weren't designed. They were what people in a rainy, working-class corner of the US already wore: secondhand flannel, thermal shirts, jeans and work boots. When Nirvana's Nevermind blew up in 1991, that thrift-store look suddenly went worldwide.

Then fashion caught on. Marc Jacobs famously showed a grunge-inspired collection for Perry Ellis in 1992, and the reaction was so mixed that it became one of the most talked-about moments in fashion history. The irony of designer grunge wasn't lost on anyone.

On the other side, bands like Hole and Babes in Toyland brought a different grunge look: babydoll dresses, slips, smeared lipstick and boots.

The key grunge pieces

  • Flannel shirts: worn open, tied around the waist, or layered under a jacket. The bigger the better.
  • Band tees: faded, cracked print, ideally secondhand.
  • Ripped jeans: straight or baggy, light or mid wash, torn at the knees.
  • Thermals and long sleeves layered under short-sleeve tees.
  • Oversized knits and cardigans: slouchy, a bit worn.
  • Slip dresses and babydoll dresses: often with a tee underneath or a cardigan on top.
  • Combat boots or worn sneakers: Dr. Martens, beat-up Converse.
  • Beanies: knit, a little stretched out.
  • Corduroy and denim jackets.

Grunge colors

Grunge isn't all black. Its palette is earthy and faded:

  • Forest green, burgundy and mustard (very flannel)
  • Washed-out black and charcoal
  • Brown, tan and olive
  • Faded denim blue

6 grunge outfit ideas

1. The classic

Band tee, open flannel, ripped straight-leg jeans, combat boots. If you only try one look, try this.

2. Slip dress and boots

A satin or floral slip dress, a white tee underneath or a big cardigan on top, tights with a ladder in them and chunky boots.

3. Layered winter grunge

Thermal long sleeve, band tee on top, flannel over that, then a corduroy jacket. Baggy jeans, beanie, boots. Warm and very 1993.

4. Plaid on plaid

A plaid mini skirt, a different plaid flannel, a black tee, fishnets and boots. Clashing patterns are allowed here.

5. Soft grunge

Oversized cream knit, black skirt or black jeans, platform boots, a choker and messy hair. It's the gentler, slightly dreamier version, popular online in the 2010s.

6. Grunge for every day

Baggy jeans, a faded tee, an unbuttoned flannel and worn-in sneakers. You could go to class, work or the show in it.

Grunge hair and makeup

Grunge hair should look like you just woke up, ideally after a good night. Think:

  • Messy, slightly greasy-looking texture (dry shampoo is your friend)
  • Shaggy layers or a grown-out cut
  • Faded dye: washed-out blue, pink or bleached ends. Our alt hair color ideas has more.

For makeup, smudged brown or black liner, bare skin and a muted berry or brown lip. It shouldn't look polished.

How to shop for grunge

Grunge is the easiest alt style to do cheaply, because it started in thrift stores. Some tips:

  • Shop the men's section for flannels, it's where the big ones are.
  • Go a size or two up on knits and shirts.
  • Look for real band tees at thrift and secondhand shops.
  • Don't fear wear and tear. Small holes and faded colors are a plus.

Grunge accessories

Grunge keeps accessories low-key. A few that fit the look:

  • A thin velvet or black cord choker
  • A simple silver chain or two
  • Chipped dark nail polish
  • A worn leather belt
  • Round or small oval sunglasses
  • A canvas backpack or a thrifted shoulder bag
  • Fingerless knit gloves in winter

Grunge every day

The best thing about the grunge aesthetic is how wearable it is. A flannel over a plain tee works for class, a casual office, a weekend at the record shop or a show. In summer, swap jeans for cut-off shorts with tights or bare legs, keep the boots and tie the flannel around your waist. In winter, layer everything you own. There's no wrong way to be warm in grunge. And the more you wear your clothes, the better they look, which is the opposite of most fashion.

Grunge vs other alt styles

  • Grunge vs goth: grunge is casual and earthy, goth is darker and more dramatic.
  • Grunge vs punk: punk is spiky and loud, grunge is slouchy and laid-back.
  • Grunge vs emo: emo is fitted and black with band merch, grunge is baggy and faded.

The great part is they mix well. A grunge flannel over a goth lace top is a strong look. For more on the whole family of alt styles, see our alt fashion guide.

The grunge soundtrack

You can't fully get the grunge aesthetic without the music. Good starting points:

  • Nirvana, Nevermind and In Utero
  • Soundgarden, Superunknown
  • Pearl Jam, Ten
  • Alice in Chains, Dirt
  • Hole, Live Through This
  • Mudhoney, Superfuzz Bigmuff

If you love these records, put one of them on your profile as your Anthem on Alt Chat. It's a fast way to find people who'll argue with you about the best Soundgarden album. And if you're a guy looking for more style ideas, check out alt fashion for guys.
